Pick the List tasting: The Results / top 11
Thank you to everyone who came for our "small" tasting last Friday. The first time we had punters through the door and Highams Park residents were drinking wines on the concrete floor of 'Computers Fixed'. Quite a momentous occasion, with a great atmosphere on the night. We're really looking forward to welcoming you back when we open in November.
We opened up 59 wines and gave the wine lovers of Highams Park free rein on the selection. All comments - good, bad or indifferent - were welcomed, and there were some very thorough responses, for which we are really grateful.
Tanya has put the results into her machine and come out with the top 11 (below), in order of Friday's tasting. We would have gone for 10, but we had a joint 10th place, which we couldn't split.
For a wine to get a point, it had to be rated either: 8+/10, two-ticks-or-higher, or smiley face. There were a few that had smiley face-with-hearts-for-eyes but you'll have to enquire about these....
Pignoletto Frizzante, Cevico Emilia Romagna, Italy
Move over Prosecco, Pignoletto has arrived! This is only "semi-sparkling" but is a lovely alternative to Prosecco, with soft fruit and an easy, aperitif-style.
Furleigh Estate Blanc de Noirs Dorset, England
Ian and Rebecca have a small vineyard in Dorset, in an area that shares similar "terroir" to Champagne. Blanc de Noirs means all red/black grapes.
Champagne Gallimard Cuvée Réserve Brut Champagne, France
Didier is a small producer growing mainly Pinot Noir on steep slopes, meaning that his wines are quite rich and perfumed.
Champagne Hébrart, Rosé 1er CruChampagneChampagne
Hébrart's Rose has been one of my favourite Champagnes for a long time - the Rose is up there with the absolute best.
Pecorino, Feudo Antico, Chieti, Italy
This is a small region in Abruzzo that produces teriific value wines. This Pecorino is quite floral with a light, mineral streak.
Zibibbo 'Vitese' (Organic), Colomba Bianca, Sicily, Italy
Great new organic producer. Zibibbo is the same grape as Muscat (of Alexandra). This is peachy, aromatic yet quite dry on the palate. The perfect foil to spicy dishes.
Grenache Gris 'Le Pal' VdP de l'Hérault, Boulevard Napoléon, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
One of the best examples of white wines from the Languedoc (remember the region La Lavieniere). An oak aged wine with a smoky, liquorice tinge.
Pinot Noir, Calusari, Timisuli, Romania
This is the Tuscany of Romania - full of rolling, picturesque vineyards. Light, soft and welcoming nose of
autumn fruits. Soft smooth and spicy flavours throughout with generous soft red fruit flavours.
Florent et Damien Burle Vin de Pays de Vaucluse "Burle Est-ce que" Rhone, France
This could be called Gigondas were it not deliberately declassified. Instead, we've got a baby Gigondas which tastes nothing like… well… you had to be there!
Massaya Le Colombier, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
Quite a fresh and very elegant style, very much in the mould of the Rhone Valley, from the cooler slopes of the Bekaa Valley. Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo blend.
Swartland Winery, Bush Vines Pinotage, Swartland, South Africa
Swartland is a rustic, barren area of South Africa, where many of the vines grow wild on these bush vines. Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, and this is a brilliant expression of the grape.
Cheers and see you soon!
